A tale of two brothers

June 6, 2007

It was a hot afternoon, sometime in late August 2002.  Times were new for us at NITK, and making new friends was the in-thing for us during those days ( as if we had any other options, after all you had to get to know the morons you were going to spend the rest of your college life with) . Anti-ragging posters  were up all over the campus, and more so in our hostel, as if they expected the seniors to be there in our hostel ( and then actually caring to read them ). However, atleast within the safe confines of our hostel, and for a brief period of time before our official interaction, those posters actually made us feel safe. Those were the times when rajma and chole tasted wonderful, and we waited for the alu parantha and butter every morning, and I took a bath before going to college in the morning.

I was walking down to the common room of our hostel, Chakradhar Bhawan. I meet this guy from Bombay, tall, lanky with ears reminding me of Captain Spark ( of Star trek fame ) . We share a pleasant introduction, but the only thing i assimilate from our talk is that he  is from Bombay, just a few days in RECK and the GT thing was already getting to me. I walk into the common room to check out some songs on the channel ETC ( songs I was going to see on the same channel over and over again for the next 4 years :( ). Suddenly, out of nowhere, the guy from Bombay comes right back in front of me. Surprised as I was, I barely managed another ‘Hi’ . The same kid, without those majestic ears. He introduced himself, different name and branch this time. I knew college was going to be different, but things were happening too fast. He relieved my shock, “We are twins, …… , catch ya later”.

For the sake of simplicity, let us call these guys – Alex and Felix. Alex, the older one ( by some 7 minutes )  and Felix, naturally the younger one ( also by some 7 minutes :D ) , probably one of those really rare things that the brothers  had in common !!! ( Felix got the nickname “Chotu” for that reason )

Over time,  first ragging, then quizzes, clubs, etc etc and ultimately being friends for life, I got to know these guys closely. Alex was doing electronics engineering and Felix, computer engineering, which they claim were their first preferences, but we still believe was due to their fear of being together.

Some of the dialouges these guys had in college, remain some of the most memorable incidents in college, firstly, due to the sheer rarity of such an event, and secondly, due to the nature in which those conversations took place. No looking into each others’ eyes, their converstaion saved up a lot of words of the English language.

A: “ Mom called”

 F: ” Anything important”

 A : “ No, call her once”

 F : “Ok”

This was one of their most lengthy discussions.

News was made when one evening Alex came searching for some paracetamol, as Felix was down with fever, also, when these two shared a common balcony room in the 3rd and final year of college, and again, when they were caught in a room, just the two of them, giving tips to each other about the game NFS. And on other such intimate moments they may have shared.

Upon my inquisitiveness regarding this behavorial pattern of them, Felix said :” He is my brother de”. Hmm…yeah, I thought, somehow we forgot that somewhere down the line.

I hope, even after reading this blog, the brothers ( the TinTin brothers as i affectionately refer to them )  remember all those ideals of peace given by the great person they share their birthday with ( 2nd October).

Wishing them all the very best of luck for their lives ahead.

About “alu anda tod fhod”

May 26, 2007

The phrase “alu anda tod fhod” rings a nostalgic bell in the minds and an irresistable urge in the stomachs and taste buds of all RECKERS ( as we prefer to call the students of NIT, erstwhile REC, Kurukshetra ). For the other lesser previledged beings of the world, I take it as a personal responsibility to explain the delights and hidden intricacies of this wonder dish, that is so much a part of our lives, a whole lot more than what we think.

Readers of this blog, might have figured out by now the literal meaning of the phrase. Alu ( potato ) and Anda ( egg) and tod fhod ( beat/batter up ) , may sound simple, but the tricks of this dish are mastered by a few talented persons only ( namely, Tinku, of Akhlu Khokha fame, off Kirmitch road).

For, the recipe, take chopped onions, and saute it in a frying pan with some red chili powder. Add an egg to it and beat it. Add bread crumbs ( 2 nos bread ) and mix well.  Serve hot with hot patti (tea) or chilled juice up. Name: Anda tod fhod Cost = Rs. 6 /-

The cullinary demands and financial desperations of RECKers inspired our beloved Khokhas to come up with “Alu Anda tod fhod”- greater fill of the stomach with comparatively marginal stress on the wallets. Before adding the bread crumbs as mentioned in the para above, add to the pan, the “Great Kurukshetra Dum Alu ” , whose recipe still remains a mystery ( can be taken as cooked potato and lots of unknown spices ) . The Great Kurukshetra Dum Alu , is a multi-purpose dish which finds its direct application in samosas, burgers, sandwiches, paranthas, and pizzas ( actually !!! refer to the fast food joint outside Mezbaan in Kurukshetra, for the torture the author of this blog has already faced) . Cook everything together, and serve hot with hot patti or chilled juice up. Readers here may note, that according to the vast experience of the author of the blog, the various components of the dish, alu, anda and bread, was NEVER found at the same temperature, inspite of them being cooked together. Anyways, Name: Alu Anda Tod Fhod, Cost : Rs. 7/-

So, did I dedicate my blogging space, to this dish found and heard only around the wilderness of Haryana ??  To something I have had a zillion times ?? Something that was mine and Wanchoo’s breakfast , lunch and dinner in the run up to Literati ’06 ?? Hmm… you could say so.

But, the more philosophically challenged, may also interpret it as a dish full of desirable things, served together for us to savour. A reminder, that good things also come in great packages. The more good you add, the better it becomes. Something, an ideal society can be perceived to be.

Till the time that happens, I’ll continue polluting the webspace with such extra-terristrial interpretations of mine. Finally, a word of advice before I retire tonight, those oblivious to the existence of this dish, make it a point to try it once. It’s worth it.

Half Done is Well Begun

Shamans Blue by The Doors plays in the background. I wait for the track to change to Love Street. My mobile service provider sends me yet another useless SMS about some new tracks for my ringtone, which i mechanically delete. Its 10.20 pm … and sleep is a whole night away from me.

Wishful Sinful. The bottle of water I just filled from the water cooler has begun perspiring. Its the only object in my room showing similar physical reactions like me in this climate. Hard to think what made the Sinatras and the Morrisons to select Indian Summer as the title for their songs ( songs which had absolutely nothing to do with an Indian summer )

Roadhouse Blues. My project work is supposed to have begun, atleast that is what my project guide thinks. Einstein’s theories regarding time dilation are all coming true, and I am exploring newer extra-curricular activities.

Thats why this blog. And add to that a brain trying  to have a say in all it can, and you have the blogs yet to come.
